Dallas-based Southwest Airlines bid $170 million for Denver-based Frontier Airlines Monday. The bid was more than the $108.8 offered by Republic Airways Holdings Inc.

The auction for Frontier is part of a plan to determine which company will take Frontier out of bankruptcy protection. According to officials at both Southwest and Frontier, the auction will begin Thursday.
